I learned at an early age that baking could also be a very profitable. I started baking cakes and cutting them into individual slices and rapping them in saran rap. I sold each slice for 1.50 or more a slice and I am telling you, I was making money fast. Every where I went I took samples of my cakes and before you know it, I had clients running out of my ears. I baked brownies, cookies, cupcakes, desert pies, and just about any cake that you can name.
I later took a decorating course and started making birthday cakes and wedding cakes. Now, probably twenties years later, I am still into cakes and catering. I absolutely love it. I write this blog post to let some know that just because you don't have a job does not mean you have to be broke. Sometimes people must use the talents that they already have. Be creative, professional, and business oriented, and I can assure you that if you have patience, in time you will see the fruit of your labour.
Here are some great tips that I want to share with you about starting this business and succeeding.
1. Start making practice cakes to see which ones taste the best.
2. Allow people that are close to you to help give you their honest opinions.
3. Start giving out samples to potential clients. Think about people that might benefit from your business.
4. Write down those people. Think about people that have small children that may celebrate a birthday. Especially people with babies turning one year old.
5. When holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving come around up your advertising. Try not to give out samples at the last minute. Start giving out samples a month before holidays.
6. When you learn about special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, wedding etc...Write down those dates and simply ask those people if they need a baker.
7. Think about how big you want your business to grow. Do you want to do this on the side or do you want to earn a full-time living from this? If you want to go big, then give samples to restaurants in your area simply by calling up the store manager and ask them if you can bring samples by. Make sure you leave a business card. Try small privately owned restaurants because larger restaurants probably have their own inside bakers.
8. When schools have carnivals try to set up a table and sell your baked goods. Think of other places where you can sell your baked items.
9. Take pictures of everything you bake. Make sure your pictures are presentable. Get a free website for your business and free business cards at webs.com and vistaprint.com.
10. Be creative and come up with your OWN recipes. People appreciate something that is different. The old traditional recipes are great but new ones are even better.
11. Make sure you have all of the necessary tools that you need to make your business a success. (the write cake pans, cookbooks, and so forth)
